First medal of the Olympic Summer Games

Chinese world champion Yi Siling earned the first Olympic gold with the air rifle over 10 meters. Silver was secured by Sylwia Bogacka (Poland), and the bronze medal was won by Yu Dan, also from China.

South Korean shooter Jin Jong-oh brought his country its first gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games in London. The world record holder beat Italian Luca Tesconi and Serb Andrija Zlatic. Four years ago in Beijing, Jin won silver. This time, he takes home the gold.

Kazakh Alexander Vinokourov, who served a two-year ban for blood doping after a positive test in 2007, stole the gold on Saturday, disappointing favorites like Britain's Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish at the Olympic road race. The Olympic gold medalist surprised everyone after the race by announcing his resignation after the Games, and an end to his career.

Triumph for Sarah Menezes

The judo gold medal at the Summer Olympic Games in London went to Sarah Menezes. She won Brazil's first Olympic gold in the sport, in the women's 48-kilogram event. Alina Dumitru from Romania, who had won gold in Beijing, won silver, while two bronze medals went to Hungarian Eva Csernoviczki and Charline van Snick from Belgium.

Arsen Galstyan took Russia's first gold of the Games in judo. The 23-year-old won the final of the 60 kilogram event against runner-up Hiroaki Hiraoka (Japan) by a large score after 41 seconds. The two-time world champion and favorite Rishod Sobirov (Uzbekistan) took the bronze medal.

China's fourth gold of the day went to favorite Wang Mingjuan in the women's weightlifting 48 kilogram category. The four-time world champion was competing in her first Olympic Games after missing out in 2004 and 2008.

Italian archery team takes gold

Italy won the gold medal in men's team archery at the Olympics on Saturday, beating the US by one point on the final shot. Michele Frangilli, Marco Galiazzo, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in singles, and Mauro Nespoli, who won bronze with Galiazzo in 2008, made up the winning trio.

Lochte wins the big duel

Eternal bridesmaid Ryan Lochte finally beat his friend and rival Michael Phelps to win the 400-meter individual medley, taking the gold for the United States. The 14-time Olympic champion Phelps had to settle for fourth place.

China's Sun Yang triumphed on Saturday evening in the 400 freestyle race and missed Paul Biedermann's world record by just seven-hundredths of a second. Silver went to South Korea's Park Tae Hwan, followed by Peter Vanderkaay (USA).

A new world record was set Saturday night by Ye Shiwen of China on the way to winning Olympic gold in the women's 400 individual medley. The 16-year-old undercut the previous record, set by Stephanie Rice of Australia, by nearly a second.
