Richard Wagner was just 20 years old when he composed his first opera. With its powerful score and themes of love and despair, "The Fairies" foreshadowed Wagner's later works. However, the opera itself was not staged during the composer's lifetime, and even today is performed only rarely. In celebration of Wagner's 200th birthday, the Leipzig Opera has rediscovered his debut work.
